When I sat down to do this blog, I was planning on relating on my activity during the lockdown, but I thought it would be OK to comment on the governor’s most recent proclamation.
Here in Arizona, the governor finally decided to announce a stay at home order. Governor Doug Ducey is just another example of a person who should not be in the office he is holding. When are we going to realize that the best person in administering a government is not a businessman? I’m happy that he can sell ice cream, but I’m not impressed with his performance as a governor.
A businessman is responsible to his stockholders and making a profit is a moral imperative. A governor should be above all else a statesman. Someone that is skilled, experienced, and respected political leader. James Freeman Clarke said “A politician thinks of the next election, a statesman of the next generation. A politician looks for the success of his party; a statesman for that of his country. The statesman wishes to steer, while the politician is satisfied to drift.”
Not all the people serving the public are paid and profit is not the end all of motivations. For example, in business it is a great idea to cut activities that do not produce profit. President Trump made the right decision in a business sense to terminate the White House Pandemic Office. When he closed it, there was no active pandemic. He dissolved the office because there was no immediate need for it. Now he claims he’s a “war time president” and doing a great job while simultaneously claiming “I don’t take responsibility at all.” This is funny to me. If anything, good happens, he always takes full responsibility. In many cases, he takes responsibility for things he had nothing to do with.
Okay, using Trump’s metaphor as a war time president, let’s say that we’re not currently at war and our standing Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marines exceed out current security demands. Using his business sense, he would cancel all preparedness exercises and eliminate those combat units not currently engaged. Of course, that’s a bad idea but the true businessman wouldn’t have any problem with it. I served in the Air Force for 27 years. Much of the work I did was in preparation for future conflicts.
President Trump and Governor Doug Ducey might be great businessmen, but they are lacking as political leaders and suck at their jobs. The sooner we rid our government of these people the better we’ll be as a state and as a country.
